Special Meeting For Property Purchase

The Town Commission will hold a special meeting at 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 25, at Town Hall to consider the purchase of a property bordering Addie Graham Park on 173rd Avenue. This is a single family home that sits at the corner where 173rd and Rosa Lee Way intersect. It is the only structure on a plot of land that is otherwise devoted to the park. The property has changed hands several times in recent years, and months ago was offered to the town at a price that commissioners felt was too high under current market conditions.

The proposal that will come before the commission at its special meeting reflects a major reduction, well within parameters that officials considered worthy of consideration.

The purchase is seen as a unique opportunity for the town, perhaps its last chance to secure land that will add to what is an enviable collection of public open spaces in a community of this size. Officials are looking at prospects for getting state and/or federal open space grant money. Enlarging the space is considered a major step in stabilizing that residential area.

Food For Thought March 5th

The annual Food For Thought gala, sponsored by friends of the Gulf Beaches Library will be held on March 5th this year at the Madeira Beach complex situated behind the library on Boca Ciega Bay.

Some 20 area restaurants are participating in the event, offering a wide array of different foods. Beer and wine will also be available. There will be music and other entertainment.

Food For thought has become a major social event for library supporters in the area. In past years, it has raised around $8.000 to help finance library activities.

Tickets are $20. They are available at Town Hall or from library board member. The town’s representatives on the board are Commissioner Richard Bennett, who chairs the planning committee for the event, and Bo Friedman.
