Planning Report Ready
The town’s Evaluation and Appraisal Report, required by state laws that govern planning, is one step away from being formally submitted.
The report is like a scorecard, assessing how well the town has been doing in meeting the goals of its Comprehensive Plan. It also details what issues the town faces to have the plan realized and recommends plan changes. This last step comes after state officials have a chance to comment on the report.
Since the town just recently updated its Comprehensive Plan, there were few issues that needed attention. The big one is redevelopment of the Gulf Boulevard corridor, which town officials are addressing through the capital improvements program as well as new Plan goals.
Like the Comprehensive Plan itself, the evaluation involves a lot of public input. To get to the point of readiness, report details were contained on this web page, a public meeting was held and both the Planning and Zoning Board and the Town Commission have had formal public hearings.
There will be one more public hearing by the Commission at a special meeting on January 25 at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.
With that completed, the report is ready for submission. It is due in state offices by February 1.
Workshop Plots Year Ahead
Commissioners held a workshop on January 9 to review issues that are likely to need attention in the coming year. A wide range of topics was discussed, including parking restrictions, allowed uses on the beach, dock regulations and others.
As Commissioner Gary Curtis noted in remarks at the last regular Commission meeting, residents bring these items to the town’s attention. He encouraged citizens to continue to contact Town Hall when they feel there are issues that need action.
There are no votes taken in a workshop. But in the months ahead, as new legislation is enacted, it will be covered on these pages.
Deputy Earns Certification
Deputy Clerk Mari Campbell was honored by the Town Commission at its regular January meeting after she received formal notice that she had been certified by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.
Mari did extensive course work over a period of several years to earn the certification.
She was appointed deputy clerk in 2003, and is slated to take the clerk’s position when Sharon Proehl retires this spring.
Prior to joining the town, Mari worked with the City of Indian Rocks Beach in the finance department.
