No Contest, Election Cancelled

There will be no municipal election on March 11 in North Redington Beach. John Messmore, who had filed for a commission seat before the December 21 deadline, decided to withdraw from the race. That leaves incumbents Curtis Blocker and Jerry Knight unopposed, and removes the need for a municipal election. Both men will be sworn in for their new terms at the March 13 regular meeting of the commission.

Special note: This in no way affects the primary election scheduled for January 29. Selection of presidential candidates and the special tax reform measure will be the top items in that election.

Review Of Town Laws Continues

The town commission is stepping up its workshop sessions to review town ordinances and make needed revisions. In a marathon meeting on January 8, the commission dealt with regulations on swimming pools, signs and fences as well as procedures for inspections on new construction and laws prohibiting vehicle repairs. Workshops are official meetings that must be announced in a public posting and are open to any citizen who wants to attend. Commissioners can discuss issues but cannot take formal action. If and when action is needed, the appropriate legislation is presented at a regular Commission meeting. Ordinances dealing with matters considered at this last workshop will likely appear on the February 14 meeting agenda.

Library Gala Slated At New Venue

A benefit event for the Gulf Beaches Library will come off as originally scheduled on Saturday, February 16, but will be held on the library grounds in Madeira Beach. This site was considered more convenient for the people served by the library. The location is more central, there is more room for participating restaurants, and there is lots of parking nearby.

The gala has been dubbed “Food For Thought.” It will feature the offerings of at least eight of the most popular restaurants on the beaches. Tickets will be $20 in advance and $30 at the door. This includes all the food that’s available plus one complimentary drink. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

Participating restaurants include Leatherbacks, Sculley’s, Friendly Fisherman, Wine Cellar, Conch Republic, Doubletree, Salt Rock Grill and Shells.

The Gulf Beaches Library serves the towns of Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, North Redington Beach and Redington Shores.

Tickets are available at the Town Halls in the member cities as well as at the library.

Blocker In, Knight Faces Election

Incumbent Curtis Blocker automatically returns to office for another two-year term as town commissioner on March 11. Incumbent Jerry Knight, however, will face a challenger on that election day. John Messmore, who has business interests here, in Ohio and elsewhere, filed for the seat currently held by Knight before the deadline on December 21.

Blocker currently serves as Commissioner of Building. Knight is Vice Mayor.
