4th Festivities Finalized
All is in readiness for the annual 4th of July celebration. The parade will begin at 9 a.m., gathering at Addie Graham Park on 173rd Ave. It will proceed through town to
There will be fireworks again this year. They’ll be launched from the county park site in Redington Shores. They will best be seen from the northernmost sections of the beach.
With all the budget cutbacks ordered by the state legislature, this could be the last year for celebrations of this kind, especially for fireworks.
Once again, a warning that individual fireworks are prohibited by law. There will be extra deputies on duty along the beach and on Gulf Blvd. for enforcement.
Attorney Gets Raise
The town commission has approved a salary increase for Town Attorney Ed Peck. It will be his first raise in 14 years, and was authorized after comparisons showed he was earning much less than peers in neighboring communities. The new salary will be $10,500 per year. Mr. Peck has served the town for 25 years. He was earning $8,400 per year.
Reentry Permits
The newsletter that was sent out to all homes earlier this month notes that reentry permits are available at Town Hall for all residences. But they will not be available once an evacuation has been ordered. That means residents should get one at Town Hall now. Only one is available per household.
The permits can be attached to the mirror in a car or truck, and will help law enforcement speed the return of residents following an evacuation. Whether to open the communities following a storm remains a law enforcement decision. But once open, the permits will help insure that only people who belong in the community can return.
Other Items
State legislation on property tax reform dictates that North Redington Beach limit its 2008 budget to an amount equal to what it would get with a rollback tax rate less another 9 per cent. Mayor Bill Queen announced at the last Commission meeting that a preliminary budget had already been prepared that meets this requirement. While there will be little room for additional services, the current level of service will be maintained. Formal review and action on the budget will take place over the next several months.
Residents may be wondering how long the new Medjool Palms will remain wrapped. With the storm season upon us, it will be at least three months.
There are plans for augmenting the new look the palms have brought to the boulevard with other plantings in the medians. Small clusters of Indian Hawthorne will eventually be added in areas where the old palms were removed and not replaced.
The newsletter mentioned earlier is sent out each year at this time and includes critical information about flood control and hurricane preparedness. The hurricane inserts this year are especially important for people who may need assistance during an evacuation or those with pets who may need to use one of the newly designated pet friendly shelters.
