Commission Plots Gulf Blvd Beautification

When the beach communities and the Pinellas County commission reached agreement on the distribution of Penny for Pinellas money, the stage was set for local officials to begin planning the long awaited burying of utility lines as part of the beautification of Gulf Boulevard. The town commission acknowledged this at its June 19 workshop, and discussed the steps that will be taken to get the project moving. Mayor Bill Queen said some work has already been done in locating where new facilities will be located and easements required. He said the next step would be meeting with Progress Energy to get a current estimate of what the project will cost.

The Penny for Pinellas distribution, based on mileage in each of the beach communities, will bring the town $1.3 million. It is expected the overall cost for undergrounding will be greater than that, but the mayor noted that if it is within a reasonable range, the town could make up the difference.

The Penny for Pinellas money can only be used for beautification of the boulevard. This can include a number of different projects, but virtually everyone agrees that getting the utility lines buried is the most important. If a community doesn’t use its allocation, that money will be split among the others who do.

Citizens Get To Plan

For several years an organization called One Bay has been working on a regional plan for the Tampa Bay area. Led by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Commission, Tampa Bay Partnership and other partners, the effort reached out to a host of community leaders to describe the various ways the region could grow over the next 40 years.

The key event was called Tampa Bay Reality Check, and was held in May 2007. This was followed by a series of workshops throughout the region. These gatherings led to the development of four different scenarios for how the region might look in 2050.

On June 2, One Bay invited the public to participate in an unveiling of these scenarios, and to comment on which they preferred. This event was called Voice It and was conducted simultaneously in five separate locations. People who attended were encouraged to submit questions, participate in group discussions and complete a survey.

Now One Bay is reaching out to the broader community via the Internet. Anyone interested is able to go online at www.MyOneBay.com through July 15 and review the scenarios, then complete a survey of their own. It’s an interesting enterprise, showing the different ways the area might grow and the impact each will have on local resources.
