Town Prepares For Traditional Fourth

It will be another busy morning for town residents on July 4th as the traditional holiday celebration gets rolling. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. when participants gather at Addie Graham Park on 173rd Avenue for the kickoff parade. Sheriff’s cars and fire engines will once again be on hand, along with the usual gang of convertible cronies. But the focus will be on the imaginative work that the average citizens bring to the parade, and prizes will be awarded for the best decorated entry. As always, people can join the parade anywhere along the route from the starting point to the destination at Harold Radcliffe Park.

Once at the park, there will be hot dogs and snow cones, cupcakes and a balloon twister, and plenty of water and soft drinks.

New this year will be a history quiz, for kids of all ages, with prizes going to the winners.

Town officials had hoped that fireworks could be brought back, and even provided for that in the budget. But there had to be a cooperative effort with neighboring towns for this to work, and once again, officials couldn’t come up with a site that would work for everyone.

That means town residents will have to travel to other communities if they want to see live fireworks displays. The closest events will be at Redington Shores, at the county park on Gulf Boulevard; and at Madeira Beach, at the ball fields behind City Hall on Boca Ciega Bay. Both events will start at 9 p.m.
