Public Hearings Scheduled On Budget
The first of two public hearings on the fiscal 2008 town budget will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 30 at Town Hall. The second hearing will be held in conjunction with the town commission’s regular meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 13, also at Town Hall. The budget will be ready for formal adoption by the commission following the second hearing and becomes effective on October 1, the start of the new fiscal year.
The proposed budget marks the second year in a row that the town will reduce millage rates for property owners. The proposed new rate will be 0.7511 mills. The budget itself exceeds the cutbacks that were ordered by the state legislature in its property tax reform action earlier this year. Property owners can review the budget at Town Hall or get additional information by calling the clerk at 391-4848.
Beach Concessions Renewed
The town commission has renewed the licenses for 2007-2008 of the two long-standing concessionaires serving the beach. The licensees are Beach Service West and Wind Surfin International. Together they provide residents and visitors with recreational equipment and lounge facilities.
New Crosswalk Planned
The state has announced plans to add another crosswalk to a portion of Gulf Boulevard that sees heavy pedestrian traffic. The new walk will run between the Grand Shores West and the Wine Cellar Restaurant on the north end of town.
Like several other walks in town, this will have a pedestrian actuated signal to warn motorists that someone is preparing to cross. It was noted at a recent commission meeting that not everyone takes advantage of these signals. They have been installed as an extra safety device, and pedestrians should take the time to locate the very visible button that sets them off on the pole at the side of the crosswalk entrance. Even with the lights on, pedestrians are urged to enter the walk with caution, making sure that motorists are stopping.
