Budget Approved for Fiscal 2008
The Town Commission has unanimously approved the proposed budget for fiscal year 2008. Action came after a second public hearing on September 13. Only two people spoke, including former Mayor Harold Radcliffe. Both lauded the commission for its work in reducing the millage rate to its lowest level in recent memory. The new rate is 0.7511 mills, the lowest among all county municipalities that support a full time staff.
The proposed budget calls for general fund expenditures of $803,665. This compares to $842.288 that was budgeted for the current year. Income from property taxes is projected at $377,384, down from $412,342 in this year’s budget.
Town officials were able to make the cuts without any reduction in basic municipal services and despite a 9 per cent increase in the sheriff’s charges and a 4 plus per cent increase in the charge for fire services. The only discernible change in projected town services will be the elimination of the July 4th fireworks. Other public events, e.g. the Christmas tree lighting, the boat parade and the July 4th parade and picnic will go on as scheduled.
Officials will also curtail travel expenses, but improvements to public spaces will continue at the pace of recent years. Copies of the budget are available at Town Hall.
Beach Fires Banned
The town commission also completed action on an ordinance banning fires on the beach. That includes open fires or coal or gas fired grills. Individuals or organizations who are planning special events that may include fire can apply to the Town Hall for a special permit.
Resolution Paves Way For New Crosswalk
The state needed a special resolution before it could authorize work on the new crosswalk that will run between the Grand Shores International and the Wine Cellar Restaurant on the north end of town. Like several other walks in town, this will have a pedestrian actuated signal to warn motorists that someone is preparing to cross. This too was approved by the commission. No date has been set yet for work to begin.
Check Beach Access
As part of the development agreement that accompanied approval for the new Redington Grand, the developers agreed to improve the beach access that runs next to the building. This is now complete and residents are encouraged to check it out. Town officials hope that it will serve as a prototype for the improvement of other access paths that may lie ahead.
