Town of North Redington Beach News
September 23, 2010
The town commission unanimously approved the budget and millage rate for the next fiscal year that begins October 1. Action came at a special meeting on September 16, following a second public hearing. There were no objections to the proposed budget. At the initial hearing on September 9, several residents commended the commission for holding the millage rate at 0.7511 mills, the lowest among municipalities with staff.
The overall budget calls for total expenditures of $5,782,762. This was some $195,000 greater than projected revenues, but a healthy reserve fund was tapped to make up the difference. Historically, expenditures often fall short of budget projections. The general fund budget, which covers day-to-day operations, including police, fire and full-time staff totaled $842,209. Three other funds make up the difference: special revenue/capital improvements, stormwater and sanitary sewer.
The commission also approved an extension of its five-year capital improvements plan. Among key projects included in that period are beautification of Gulf Blvd (to be funded with special Penny for Pinellas funds), park improvements and street resurfacing. The latter is scheduled further along in the planning period. The state, however, is looking to repave Gulf Blvd in the near term.
Area Feels Fall Slow Down In Tourism
September is generally considered the slowest month of the year for tourist activity, and this year has been no exception. There are hopeful signs that a pick up is in the offing.
Not the least of these are reports from some Panhandle resort areas of a Labor Day crowd closer to traditional norms. This in an area that was hard hit by the oil spill.
Near month’s end, tourist facilities in this neck of the woods were also showing an uptick, as were restaurants and entertainment venues.
Event Planners Checking Dates
Weather was less than kind to the town this past year, forcing cancellation of the annual Christmas Tree lighting and the July 4th parade and picnic. Event planners are hoping for better this year as they look forward to the Christmas holiday.
So far, the only event on the schedule is the annual lighted boat parade. That will be Sunday, December 19. There are plans to resume the tree lighting, Santa tour of the town and decoration contest. Dates will be published in this space when set.
