Department of Community Affairs Notice

The Department of Community Affairs has released a notice of intent to find the Ammendment to the Comprehensive Plan for the Town of North Redington Beach.

Town Registers Record Vote

The 2006 midterm election is now history. For the North Redington Beach precinct, it was one for the record books. While turnout across the state was somewhat disappointing, voters in NRB set an all time record with 680 votes cast.

In addition to picking state and national office holders, and deciding on state and county issues, the voters gave local officials a vote of confidence by approving increases in their monthly stipend. With about 57 per cent of the electors approving, the mayor will now get $500 per month and the four other commissioners $300.

Holiday Schedule

The holiday season is fast approaching. Time to mark your calendars for traditional town festivities.

Things will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 1, with the second annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at Harold Radcliffe Park. The inaugural a year ago was a huge success.

The tree will be the centerpiece of a decorated gazebo, the principal structure in the park. There will be refreshments served and special treats for the youngsters. Maybe even a surprise guest. And this year, the younger set will have new playground equipment to help keep them occupied.

On Saturday, December 16 at 10 a.m., the popular Santa parade will take place.

Finally, the big boat parade will take place on Sunday, December 17. It starts at dusk.

Crosswalks Get Flashers

Two crosswalks, those at each end of town, are now equipped with pedestrian actuated flasher lights courtesy of the state Department of Transportation. The lights go on as soon as a pedestrian pushed a button and stay on for almost a minute on both sides of the median.

The idea is to alert motorists 1) to the existence of crosswalks in town, and 2) to give additional warning to drivers that a pedestrian is about to enter the walk.

Pedestrians are still encouraged to use caution in crossing; to be sure all motorists are stopping before they enter the walk.

`` After a trial period, the town will decide whether the flashing devices should also be installed at the other crosswalks.

This is part of a continuing campaign by beach communities to enhance pedestrian safety along Gulf Boulevard. Experts who have studied actions to date say the towns are on the right track, and have given suggestions for doing even more.

One continuing problem is the number of people who ignore the crosswalks and cross in the middle of the block without any legal protection. Sometimes they need only take a few extra steps to be at the crosswalk.
